Open innovation has gained increased managerial and academic attention since and follows theoretical approaches of innovation networks. My dissertation reports an explorative action research study on participatory cases about how open innovation partnerships emerge in practice. I was engaged in industrial and academic projects where new ideas, external technologies and new start-up ventures were searched and matched for open innovation projects. Therefore, the formation of new network ties for joint business opportunities, matchmaking, is in the focus of the research. The problem of matchmaking arises from the network and market structure. In the thesis, it is shown that matchmaking for open innovation requires a multi-sided market perspective. Innovation intermediaries act as matchmaker and coordinate the matching process between multiple market agents. The contribution is a shift from matchmaking as pure transaction-based market mechanisms towards interactive mechanisms over time, but with economic long-term impact for all market agents.

What are the impacts of online mentoring on entrepreneurial performance? This study will use a combination of experimental and quasi-experimental approaches to examine two research questions related to online mentoring for entrepreneurs. The randomised controlled trial is being conducted in partnership with a large international nonprofit organisation MicroMentor, a programme of Mercy Corps that facilitates mentor-mentee connections online.
Specifically, we will test the effectiveness of two strategies designed to help entrepreneurs connect to mentors — building confidence or reducing information asymmetry.

For more than a decade, the online dating site eHarmony has pitched itself as a company that matches singles with romantic partners who are looking for lifelong relationships. Now a study funded by the Santa Monica-based firm offers scientific evidence that husbands and wives who met online are more satisfied with their marriages than couples that met the old-fashioned way. In a nationally representative survey of 19, people, researchers found slightly less marital contentment and slightly higher separation rates among people who met their spouse at work, on a blind date, in a bar or at a club.
Even the happiest couples brought together offline — people who met their husbands and wives while growing up, during school, at social gatherings or at places of worship — reported marital satisfaction levels a little short of those who met their mate through an online dating site. The couple met at scientific conference in Shanghai, not online. Another coauthor, Gian C. UCLA social psychologist Benjamin Karney said the study appears to have been well designed and conducted.
But its suggestion that match-making websites produce more successful marriages is misleading, he said. Imagine a study that said couples who first met at the theater had better marriages than couples who met at a rodeo. Since their emergence in the s, dating websites have grown from an online novelty to a modern-day version of a singles bar. In a sign of just how ubiquitous online dating has become, Cacioppo and his colleagues found that more than a third of the couples in their survey who got married since met on the Internet.
On the whole, couples introduced online were very much like couples that first met face-to-face. But the differences between the two groups were large enough that they were unlikely to be due to chance or a statistical error, the research team reported.

MapReduce is a powerful platform for large-scale data processing. To achieve good performance, a MapReduce scheduler must avoid unnecessary data transmission by enhancing the data locality placing tasks on nodes that contain their input data. This paper develops a new MapReduce scheduling technique to enhance map task’s data locality. To evaluate our technique, we compare not only MapReduce scheduling algorithms with and without our technique but also with an existing data locality enhancement technique i.
Experimental results show that our technique often leads to the highest data locality rate and the lowest response time for map tasks. Furthermore, unlike the delay algorithm, it does not require an intricate parameter tuning process. Matchmaking : A new MapReduce scheduling technique. Four studies document and explore the psychology underlying people’s proclivity to connect people to each other—to play “matchmaker. Complex problems often need to be approached from multiple angles, and funding agencies are making priorities to support more interdisciplinary projects than before. And I would not be so quick to call interdisciplinary research a trend. Funding agencies have recognized a need to fund projects that are breaching scientific boundaries and disciplines.
